BARBADOS’ senior women’s hockey team gave it their best shot in finishing second to repeat champions Brazil in the Pan American Challenge in Chiclayo, Puerto Rico.
The Bajan girls, who had scored 18 goals and played unbeaten in their first four matches, managed only one in the final on Sunday despite creating several chances in the second half to lose 3-1 to Brazil.
Barbados joined Brazil in qualifying for the elite eight-nation Pan American Cup in 2017, which features the best eight teams in the Pan Am region competing for the cup and a place in the 2018 FIH Hockey World Cup Finals.
The Brazilian defence, which had conceded just two goals before the final, was again very miserly, giving up a solitary goal, to midfielder Tricia-Ann Greaves in the 52nd minute.
