THE HARRISION COLLEGE trio of Yu Tien Poon, Nitin Mahtani and Kyle Sandiford are the Barbados Chess Federation’s national Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 champions, respectively.

They emerged as winners when the four-day championships ended last Friday at the Barbados Community College.

FIDE Master Poon, the reigning senior and Under-20 champion, swept to seven successive victories on the way to topping the Under-18 division with a 100 per cent winning record.

In light of relatively small number of entrants, both the Under-18 and Under-16 sections were amalgamated into one competition.

Mahtani finished with five points, ending the tournament strongly with four successive victories after losing to Poon in the second round and Tristan Small in the third. (HG)
