AFTER THEIR BRUSH with Tropical Storm Tomas six years ago, Barbadians are taking few chances with another weather system that is trained in the island’s direction.
Already officials from the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) and the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) have warned that by this evening the country should begin to experience heavy rainfall and gusty winds that could even reach tropical storm force.
Up to late last night, lines were forming in some supermarkets and retail outlets as people tried to beat what is expected to be heavy traffic today as the picture becomes clearer on the possible direction and strengthening of the adverse weather system.
Director of the BMS, Hampden Lovell, in a Severe Weather Statement issued, said as many as eight inches of rainfall could come from the weather system which is moving at a rapid 15 to 20 miles per hour in a westward to west-northwestward direction, taking it on a path towards Barbados. (TSG/SB/GE)
