THE ISLAND’S FRINGING coral reefs are getting a new lease on life in a groundbreaking four-year pilot project.
New coral is being grown in the lab at the Bellairs Research Institute at Holetown, and later, with the help of divers from Barbados Blue, will be transplanted at sites along the West and South Coasts.
In recent years, concern has been expressed about the state of the reefs, especially in the popular tourist belt on the West Coast. Marine biologists and conservationists have blamed run-off pollution and increased water temperatures for their state.
Director of Bellairs, Susan Mahon, said her facility had recently taken over management of the coral cultivation lab. (HLE)
