Dover land snapped up

An unnamed organisation scooped up all three lots for almost half a million dollars, during the first of a series of planned land auctions by the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) which took place in Christ Church on Monday.

Barbadians gathered near an overgrown area in Dover Gardens, eager to capitalise on the opportunity to get a piece of the rock for a relatively low price.

BRA’s director of shared services Wayne Forde said such auctions were a last resort.

“This is as a result of a culmination of arrears on properties where taxes have not been paid for a number of years. We sent out notices and gave amnesties and the personshave not responded. We’ve bent over backwards to make it as easy as possible to pay. Over the years we’ve implemented a number of amnesties – including the one ongoing until monthend – but eventually some people still end up defaulting again,” he said. (CA)
