Worthing Beach remains closed

Worthing Beach remains closed to the public.

The closure includes those beaches from the entrance of St. Lawrence Gap to the zone at the bottom of Rendezvous Hill. This is to facilitate the ongoing repair work to the South Coast Sewage System, where wastewater has been entering the canals to the East of the Graeme Hall Swamp.

To maintain the balance in the swamp and to regulate levels, the sluice gate at Worthing Beach is opened when necessary on the falling tide to allow for the flow of water from the swamp out to Worthing Beach.

The Barbados Water Authority is also currently engaged in the construction of a marine outfall off the Worthing Beach and to facilitate these works, as well as the balancing of the swamp, it is necessary that the beaches remain closed.

The Environmental Protection Department, under the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification, was mandated by the Cabinet of Barbados to conduct daily sampling at Worthing Beach and other beaches along the South Coast.

Daily sampling commenced on September 6, 2018, and will continue until the ecological conditions in the Graeme Hall Swamp have been normalized. Updates on the status of the affected beaches will be provided as required. (BGIS)
