Businessman granted bail

Businessman DaCosta Brathwaite, 53, was given bail today after he, and Jamaican George Williams, appeared in the District “A” Magistrates on cannabis charges.

Brathwaite , No. 2 Chelston Gardens , Culloden Road, St Michael and Williams, a 50-year old fisherman, of 671 Carlston Road, Cumberland, Portmore, Jamaica but staying at “Arjan”  Apartment #2, 1st Avenue Accommodation Road, Bush Hall, St Michael were not required to plead to engaging in preparatory acts, for the purpose of trafficking cannabis and conspiring with another person to traffic in the illegal drug on December 20. The drugs are worth $440 000.

Despite objections to bail for both men by the prosecutor Station Sergeant Carrison Henry, Magistrate Douglas Frederick granted $220 000 bail, with two sureties, to Brathwaite who is represented by attorneys Michael Lashley QC, Romain Marshall and Dayna Taylor-Lavine.

However, Williams, who is represented by attorney Harry Husbands, was remanded to HMP Dodds.

Both men are expected back in the Criminal Court No. 2 on January 24. (RA)
