Christians chided

CHRISTIANS ARE GETTING a rebuke from one of their leaders for not doing enough to spread the true meaning of Easter.

Anglican Bishop of Barbados Michael Maxwell scolded them yesterday after observing that people knew more about Christmas than this season of sacrifice, which was the pillar on which the Christian church was built.

Delivering the sermon at the St Michael’s Cathedral on Resurrection Sunday, Maxwell, who once taught religious education at The Lodge School and Christ Church Foundation, said students could recite the meaning of Christmas with authority, but often came up short when asked about Easter.

“They would tell me they eat Easter eggs, they fly kites, but they never tell me they go to church to celebrate the basis of the faith. When I asked them about Christmas, they know the story because they get gifts at Christmas.

“That’s because we as Christians have not been doing very well in passing on the foundation of our faith, because if the little ones don’t understand what Easter is all about . . . , then something is wrong,” he declared. (TG)
