Ellon Lewis has done it beautifully with his collection of Barbadian Landscapes at the Bridgetown Gallery (used to be Zemicon), Hincks Street.  The beauty spots of Bath, the gullies and mangrove area, Batts Bay, Bulkley… no sharp-edge illustrations here but inviting expressionism with a lot of warmth. Open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or for appointments call 430-0054.
What do Don Small, Alison Chapman-Andrews, Justin Downey and Natalie Atkins have in common? Check the two-dimensional art segment of the NCF Crop-Over Visual Arts Exhibition at the Grande Salle where they’ve been selected for a possible grand prize win!Lots of interesting 2-D Art (paintings and drawings to behold)… from Bussa “brekkin’” up the town, to the serenity of Omowale Stewart’s Early Morning Light – the artist says the latter is his vision of Haiti the morning after the quake.  Photography too as two dimensional… Familiar names like Rasheed Boodhoo, Dr. Raymond Maughan and Leslie Taylor catch the eye.
And yes, 3-D follows 2-D when the sculptors and several craft creators go all out to impress. There are also mini-NCF expo’s at Royal Shop, Cave Shepherd and the Satjay Business Centre.  Reflections at the Gallery of Caribbean Art, highlighting oils and watercolours from Denzil Mann and Neville Legall, and it’s all about Barbados. Great stuff for those who want to take a piece of the island back home. Picturesque Speightstown is the gallery’s locale. Runs until August 15.
July 31 sees the close of the Karl Broodhagen Centenary Exhibition. It’s been well-attended. Old friend, George Lamming, spent time last week taking it all in. You should take the time for that special Queen’s Park visit. Also in the city is the Festival Gallery on the First Floor of Norman Centre.by Carolle Bourne
