KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – St. Vincent and the Grenadines has recorded two inches of rainfall over the past 24 hours resulting in numerous landslides and flooding across the island.
The Ministry of Education ordered the closure of all schools and the National Emergency Organisation (NEMO) said that every effort is being made to deal with “all eventualities”.
The local Meteorological Office said that the island is being affected by the unsettled conditions associated with the broad area of low pressure that is also causing similar weather patterns in neighbouring Caribbean islands.
The Office has issued a flood warning as moderate to heavy rains are expected to affect the island on Monday and NEMO said that crews were already engaged in clearing some of the landslides and debris that have made some roads impassable.
There were no reports of injuries or deaths, but NEMO said that some houses had their roofs blown away by the heavy winds and rains.
The weather situation has also affected neighbouring Barbados, where several businesses and schools were closed .
Over the weekend, officials in Haiti said that at least eight people were killed while in Jamaica, the death toll there is expected to continue rising as rescue workers search for at least 12 people, including four children, who have been reported missing since last week.
