Schools’ senior football heats up

With one more general round of matches left to play, the Barbados Secondary Schools Football League Senior Competition is almost at boiling point, as teams try to qualify for the final eight tomorrow.
The competition has involved 17 schools this year divided into two groups. In Zone A, defending champions Pine Hill St Leonard’s are certainly guaranteed qualification as they have amassed 17 points from their six matches, with a goal average of 18.
Deighton Griffith School, who have shocked many this tournament, sit in second position on 13 points, with Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic a point behind.
In the battle for the last qualification spot, The Lester Vaughan currently sit in fourth position on 11 points with a minus two-goal average,m and Harrison College are three points behind with an average of nine goals after routing Parkinson 11-0 last week.
A win for “Kolij” and a loss for Lester Vaughan can see The City lads advance to the knockout stage.
The fight does not end there, as the usually consistent St James Secondary have found the going tough in 2010, sitting in sixth position. However, with two games in hand, and with five points (GA:+1), the Trents-based unit are still with a chance of qualification, if they attain maximum points in their remaining encounters.
Zone B has had less wizardry. After a slow start, Combermere have found themselves at the top of the table, edging Coleridge and Parry on goal difference as each has 16 points.
CP’s northern neighbours Alexandra lie in third position with 13 points and two games remaining, making qualification almost inevitable.
The final spot in the quarter-finals can go to either The Lodge School or Alleyne School. Lodge currently sit in fourth on 12 points along with Queen’s College, but with a superior goal average. Meanwhile, Alleyne School have nine points, but with two games to spare, possibly finishing with a maximum of 15 points if they win their remaining two games.
The competition is expected to finish on December 13 at a venue to be decided.
