Settlers: The West Coast Experience (SWCE) presents Taino themed moonlight costume revelry along Barbados’ platinum coast and Rayz: The Sunrise Arieto breakfast after-party on Friday 25th March, 2011.
This premium, all inclusive heritage tourism product boasts an eclectic fusion of local and international sounds which will set the pace for hundreds of revellers as they depart the bottom of Holders Hill, St. James at midnight and awaken the West Coast with their rhythmic movements and Taino themed costumes.
The carnival culminates at Folkstone Marine Park for Rayz: The Sunrise Arieto – a breakfast party featuring some of the island’s finest cuisine.
SWCE celebrates the historical landscape and heritage of Barbados whilst fusing it with the dynamics of modernisation – combining our past with our future to offer an experience unparalleled by any other.
Managing director of SWCE, Toni Thorne, explains that it is SWCE’s vision for the carnival be held annually; each year paying homage in order of settlement to the cohoblopot of peoples who represent the cultural makeup of the island. The inaugural theme, ‘Arieto’ represents Barbados’ indigenous people, the Taino. ‘Arieto’ is synonymous with extra curricular activities and celebrations within the Taino culture (more commonly known as the Arawaks).
The SWCE five-member team (Toni Thorne, managing director; Chereda Grannum, marketing co-ordination director; Aynsley Johnson, quality assurance director; Samora Reid, IT director and Rene Forde, production director) is answering the public call of Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy for more young people to get involved in creative strategies whilst playing their part in the tourism sector. Their ages range from 23 to 25 years old.
Member of Parliament for the St James Central constituency George Hutson endorsed the event during the February11 SWCE media launch at Zaccios Restaurant, Holetown, St. James.
Hutson stressed that it was the Government’s policy to encourage and support laudable youth initiatives such as SWCE and congratulated the team on their great contribution to the cultural entertainment industry.
Chereda Grannum, marketing co-ordination director for SWCE described the initiative as “an affordable and superior product, which fuses authentic Barbadian historical elements with a unique and creative approach to quality entertainment. This will be Barbados’ most spectacular event outside of the CropOver season”. (PR)
