Barbadian athletes are failing at top international levels because of a poor training system, Minister of Education Ronald Jones said yesterday.
In expressing concern over what he sees as their inability to take their good performances beyond the junior level, he called for more money and expertise to be provided to support them.
“Our model is not the best model for development of athletes,” Jones said at a ceremony marking a milestone in the Queen’s College Pavilion Fund-Raising Drive. “So we perform reasonably well up to the Under-17/Under-19 and we fail to follow up,” he said.
At the function held at the Husbands, St James school, the Queen’s College alumni fund-raising committee celebrated passing the $600 000 mark in a drive towards $1.2 million to provide sports facilities, including a pavilion for the school. (GA)
