Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley has lauded the “incredible performances” of Barbados’ track and field athletes, who captured 16 medals, including five gold, five silver and six bronze at the just concluded CARIFTA games.
Describing their efforts as “remarkable”, he said the successes were complemented by those of the Barbados Chess Team, which finished among the elite at their championship with one gold and four bronze medals.
Lashley noted that the 24 medals comprising seven gold, 11 silver and six bronze, copped by the swimmers was “equally impressive”.
“Team Barbados, you have done your nation proud and so we salute you all,” he said.
Lashley singled out triple gold medal winner Akela Jones, for praise, pointing out that her versatility allowed her to excel in the Under-20 long jump, high jump and the 100m hurdles. She was also adjudged the most outstanding athlete in track and field, capturing the coveted Austin Sealy Award.
To this feat, Lashley said Jones had been instrumental “in once again etching the name of Barbados into the annals of regional sports”.
He added: “This showcasing of excellence by our junior athletes is indicative of the immense potential of Barbadian youth. It is envisioned that with the correct focused attention and training, these juniors can graduate to successes at the more senior games.”
The Minister of Sports reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the National Sports Council to providing an enabling environment and said he looked forward to the continued success of Barbados’ young athletes.
Track and field events as well as the chess tournament were held in Martinique, while the swimming championships took place in Aruba. (BGIS)
