Moore: Poor food handling a costly business

GENERAL SECRETARY of the Barbados Workers’ Union Toni Moore yesterday warned that badly prepared food can not only make people sick, but cause deaths and hurt the economy.

She made the comment at the opening of a food handlers’ workshop at the union’s Harmony Hall, St Michael complex for food caterers taking part in the union’s May Day celebrations.

Moore said that across the globe unsafe food was linked to an estimated two million deaths and losses to farming and other industries running into billions of dollars.

Workshop facilitator Trevor Taylor, an environmental health officer with the Ministry of Health, said the ministry was concerned that some food handlers did not wash their hands often enough and some did not meet the required dress code because their armpits were exposed. (TY)
