BARBADIAN Akela Jones was named Female Athlete of the Year on Wednesday night when Kansas State University held its annual Mark A. Chapman Powercat Choice Awards.
These awards, the school’s version of ESPN’s ESPY Awards, celebrate teams and individuals across the sporting spectrum and in the classroom.
Jones, who is in her first year at the school but is a junior, took the top award after winning the Big 12 Conference Indoor long jump title and multiple All-American honours.
She has rewritten the schools’ record books in the 60m hurdles and long jump and also set several meet and facility records during competition.
