MINISTER WITH RESPONSIBILITY for Energy, Senator Darcy Boyce is confident Barbados can save hundreds of millions of dollars in energy costs within five years.
During a church service for CARICOM Energy Week in the Christ Church Parish Church this morning, Boyce said the plan was to save up to $300 million a year in fuel by 2020 by utilising solar and wind energy.
After the service, Boyce told Nation Online how this was going to be possible.
“We can’t judge from where we are now but from what is in the works. Government is working to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings to generate electricity; the Barbados Light and Power is working on wind and solar farms and a lot of business and people are applying for licences to generate power,” he said.
Boyce said there were also a focus on LED bulbs and saving energy in the transportation sector.
“There is a whole range of things happening we can focus on in the next couple years . . . [you] will see a swelling of activity in the next three to four years,” he said.
During his sermon church rector, reverend Austin Carrington advised the congregation to be good stewards of the gifts given by God by utilising their talents for the good of all. (CA)
