AFRICAN AWARENESS MONTH begins on Monday, February 1.

During the month, a number of schools across the island will stage events to commemorate the period, known elsewhere as Black History Month, with George Lamming Primary School and St. Boniface Nursery School being among the first to kick off their activities.

George Lamming Primary School, located at Flint Hall, St Michael, will begin on Monday February 1, at 9 a.m. under the theme Retracing Our Steps: From Africa To Barbados.

Tutor in Political Science at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Dr Sandra Ochieng-Springer, will address the theme as she talks to students, teachers and parents at the start of the celebrations, in the school hall.

Meanwhile, St. Boniface Nursery School in Sion Hill, St James, will kick start their activities on Monday at 10:30 a.m.  The theme this year is Africa – Then and Now, and cultural practitioner, Len Sehntwali, will be on hand to speak on Our African Heritage. Accompanied by his daughter Eja, one of Barbados’ youngest stilt walkers, Sehntwali will dramatise some Anansi stories.

He will also allow students the opportunity to view and play several African musical instruments, including drums and the Kpanlogo bells.

African Awareness Month will be celebrated, at most schools, until February 29, but some activities, however, will extend into March. (BGIS)
