OPPOSITION LEADER Mia Mottley feels there are many other things on which government could spend less than it is spending on the Independence celebrations and yet leave a tangible legacy for the next 50 years.

She spoke yesterday in the House of Assembly as Parliament debated a resolution congratulating the island on the attainment of its 50th anniversary of Independence.

The political leader of the Barbados Labour Party said the opposition believed the celebrations should reflect events that could withstand the test of time and would be tangible for those who had given their best in the last 50 years.

She suggested the Ministry of Tourism could find 50 people who had spent 25 years or more helping “to build out the hotel and tourism sectors in the country in the last 50 years” to salute “in a tangible way”.  (HLE)
