GOVERNMENT IS TAKING active steps to improve the employment potential of retrenched workers and other job seekers.
A giant step in that direction will come with the rebranding of the National Employment Bureau (NEB), which will soon be renamed the Barbados Employment and Career Counselling Service (BECCS).
Speaking at a sensitisation session at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre this morning, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour Yolande Howard said BECCS will provide a range of services, including job placement.
“BECCS is being strategically placed to provide to make a valued contribution to the growth of the Barbadian economy. At present the NEB currently faces a number of constraints which have limited its ability to provide sustained, quality employment services and to respond to social and economic issues such as poverty alleviation and unemployment,” she said.
Howard added: “These factors include inadequate human resources, a weak presence in the labour market, weak linkages with training institutions and the inflexibility and inefficiency of a predominantly manual information system, among others. It is expected that the continuing capacity building, in which we’re now engaged will lead to an improvement in services and how these services are offered . . . .It is anticipated that enhanced relations and methods of communication with our stakeholders will be to an enhanced capability and more targeted services.” (YB)
