THE WILDEY GYMNASIUM has survived a baptism by fire.
CARIFESTA won’t go up in smoke, as the Gymnasium’s $18 million renovations look set to meet next month’s deadline after the building seemingly suffered no structural damage from yesterday’s big blaze.
Interim chief executive officer Jerry Blenman gave the unofficial assessment after four fire tenders were called around midday to put out a fire that was contained to a huge pile of rubble outside the northern end of the Gym.
“We got reports of a fire on the outside of the Gymnasium around 12:25, and it is not the Gymnasium, it is debris that has been demolished, given the extensive refurbishment that is taking place at the Gymnasium,” said Blenman, who was on site. (JM)
