PLAYING WITH THE resolve and determination of a true champion, Mark “Venom” Griffith captured the inaugural Lance Bynoe A1 Supermarkets Masters Open road tennis championship with a regal dismissal of Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel on Monday night at the Rubis Courts, Brighton.
Griffith stunned the large crowd and his Goliath opponent from a worrying position of 13-19 to take the match and a cheque for $10 000, 22-20, 21-14.
Daniel had whipped the crowd into a frenzy with four breathtaking smashes and Kodak poses to take charge 4-0 from the beginning of the match.
With Griffith appearing to be a big fish caught on the line of a skillful angler, he floundered around as Daniel unreeled some of his best shots to motor to 10-3. The game was held up for two minutes when Griffith returned a scorcher and Daniel glided into the court to drop the ball at an acute angle behind the net leaving Griffith on the ground and the fans running around the arena jumping and screaming.
