THE QUEEN ELIZABETH Hospital could be next.

Reports reaching NATION ONLINE indicate a representative from the National Union of Public Workers visited staff at the Martindale’s Road, St Michael facility this evening and told them to take industrial action tomorrow.

The action is expected to involve all categories of staff except doctors.

This would be the latest strike by a coalition of the island’s four largest trade unions as they seek to get Government to revisit the 400 per cent increase in the National Social Responsibility Levy.

Last week, the NUPW, Barbados Workers’ Union, Barbados Union of Teachers and Barbados Secondary Teachers Union warned the Freundel Stuart administration that failure to respond to their requests in 48 hours would be met with industrial action.

Starting Monday, unionised workers were encouraged to go slow and work to rule. They were also encouraged to call in sick yesterday and today.

Operations of the Transport Board were severely affected today as workers there staged industrial action.

Yesterday, workers at Barbados Port Inc. stayed off the job for about six hours after Coast Guard members were called in to replace members of a mooring crew who reported sick. (NB)
