AG’s eye on pawn shops

PAWN SHOPS have been put on notice that they face regulation.

Speaking at a news conference at police headquarters yesterday, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite said he was concerned that inadequate due diligence was being performed by operators of the shops, making them susceptible to trading in stolen items.

“From what I am being told, which I wasn’t aware of, frankly, is that we now have a couple of pawn shops that deal with not only jewellery, but you can also take in tools and be loaned some money,” he said.

“From what I am being told, persons are in fact able to steal property, take it to these entities, have cash against them and not enough due diligence or questions are being asked to prove that the stuff is not stolen.” (RB)
