THREE BARBADIANS have advanced to the finals of their respective events at the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships in Athletics in Trujillo, Peru.
Sprinters Jaquone Hoyte and Tristan Evelyn are in the 100 metres while middle distance runner Jonathan Jones will line up for the 1 500 metres final on Sunday.
Hoyte, the CARIFTA Games silver medallist, has the fastest qualifying time of 10.48 seconds in the 100 metres. He has drawn lane four in the final.
Brazilian Felipe dos Bardi and Tarrik Brock Jr of the United States both did 10.50 seconds in the heats and will be in lanes three and six, respectively. Another Brazilian, Paulo de Oliveira, has lane five.
Barbadian Matthew Clarke did not advance with his time of 10.88 seconds.
Evelyn will be hoping to put a bad CARIFTA Games outing behind her when she lines up in lane three after clocking 11.77 seconds in the women’s event to win her heat.
Trinidadian Khalifa St Fort has the fastest qualifying time of 11.64 seconds and is drawn in lane 6.
American Rebekah Smith is in lane 4 with 11.75 seconds and lane 5 will be occupied by another American, Symone Mason, with a time of 11.79 seconds.
Jones was the 12th and final qualifier in the men’s 1 500 metres with 4 minutes 00.69 seconds.
Carlos Hernandes Samaca of Colombia leads the field with 3:51.59.Â
Aaron Worrell also started competition in the decathlon. Results from the 100 metres were not immediately available, but he was second in the long jump with 6.96 metres and fifth in the shot put with 11.07 metres.
His programme will continue with the high jump and the 400 metres.
Triston Gibbons will also compete in the men’s discus in the evening session.  (SAT)
