Sealy: Crop Over too big for NCF

MINISTER OF TOURISM Richard Sealy and Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley are at odds about the future direction for the management of the Crop Over Festival.

Sealy suggested Crop Over had become so big that the time may have come to shift responsibility for its execution from the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) to a separate entity with responsibility for the festival only.

“I think that at some point, Crop Over has grown so large and is getting so much larger, that the arrangements that surround it institutionally may have to be reviewed,” Sealy responded when asked whether the festival had achieved its original goal of attracting visitors to Barbados during the slow summer months.

“When Crop Over was resurrected it was largely a tourism effort to get visitors here. I think you would have to say that based on the numbers coming in here now, particularly people visiting friends and relatives, there is no question it has achieved its mission.” (GC)
