SO FAR, SO GOOD. Haydn Lewis’ Grand Slam debut got off to a smashing start yesterday as he picked up his first US Open victory as a coach when American Raymond Sarmiento advanced to the second round of qualifying.

Lewis was on hand to see Sarmiento ride overwhelming home crowd support in a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Frenchman on Court 6.

“Oh man, it’s great. It’s just a shame I never actually got my first win playing on court,” laughed the Davis Cup veteran mere seconds after the win.

“But it’s just great to be here, be a part of the whole event and to get the win on our first day. It’s his first Grand Slam and like any player it’s great to get that first win in the first tournament and now it’s time to focus on the next match. (JM)
