Last October, Hurricane Matthew tore through Haiti, killing more than 1000 people and wreaking devastation on a country already struggling to recover from several natural disasters in recent years.

The ladies of the Soroptimist International of Barbados extended their hands to help recently, donating a cheque to go towards their Sister Club, Soroptimist International Port au Prince to aid with rebuilding efforts in the neighbouring Caribbean nation.

The funds came from the Club’s second annual Take A Swing for Charity golf tournament held in February this year at the Apes Hill Golf Club. Scores of avid golfers, ranging from the amateur to the advanced, took to the greens at Apes Hill, raising funds for Soroptimist International Port Au Prince and the various charitable causes supported by SI Barbados.

Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, Hon. Robert ‘Bobby’ Morris was on hand to collect the donation  which will go to SI Barbados’ sister club SI Port au Prince to assist them in their various community based projects. These projects include rebuilding efforts on the country’s southern coast which was hardest bit by the Category 4 storm and many other various community based programmes.

SI Barbados’ President Ayo Barnard-Rawlins and Programme Action Officer Andrea Simon made the donation in behalf of the Club.

Barnard-Rawlins indicated that SI Barbados had a long-standing connection to Haiti through its Sister Club SI Port au Prince. “We have been hearing from our Sisters in Port au Prince the scale of the rebuilding needed as it wasn’t just homes that were destroyed but many people’s sources of income as well as crops were washed out. As long as our neighbours in Haiti need us, SIB will be there to help,” said Barnard Rawlins. (PR)
