BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Affordable mammograms and early detection will continue to help Barbadian women conquer breast cancer.

According to Marilyn Sealy, director of communications and stakeholder engagement, Cable & Wireless Barbados, more and more people are surviving breast cancer as a direct result of early detection and prompt treatment.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is annually celebrated throughout the month of October, C&W Business has joined forces with the Breast Screening Programme of the Barbados Cancer Society to Walk for the Cure.

“We have an unfortunate truth in Barbados because most, if not all people in our community, have endured their own personal battle with breast cancer, whether they were required to embark on the journey themselves or through the experiences of their mother, daughter, aunt, friend or neighbour,”she said.

Already a corporate partner of the highly successful event, which is now in its sixth year, C&W Business is now the platinum sponsor of the 10k run that will precede the 5k run and walk on Sunday, October 1 in Warrens.

“While it is true that more and more people are surviving breast cancer, thanks in part to early detection and treatment, the fact is less than 65 per cent of Barbadian women are receiving their recommended mammograms and this is a trend we must reverse,” added Sealy.

“On the upside, the Breast Screening Programme has delivered more than 100 000 mammograms since its inception in 2002 and this confirms their commitment to ensuring that Barbadian women have access to affordable mammograms.

“I therefore wish to acknowledge and congratulate the staff and volunteers of the Barbados Cancer Society, and indeed the Breast Screening Programme, for their sterling efforts over the years in the promotion of early detection and prompt treatment, along with patient care, support services and counselling.”

The 5k will take participants from the start in Warrens through Jackson, Melrose and Welches back to Warrens for the finish, while the C&W Business 10k run will start in Warrens heading south to the Norman Niles Roundabout before returning to Warrens for the finish. (PR)
