MARTYN DEL CASTILHO has retained his national chess title by the narrowest of margins.

Despite playing to a draw in his final round match, del Castilho clinched his sixth national title when the 2017 championships concluded at the Barbados Olympic Association headquarters on Tuesday night.

del Castilho, national champion for four successive years starting in 2009, finished the championships with nine-and-a-half out of a maximum 11 points, to edge out former champion Terry Farley by a mere half-point.

FIDE Master del Castilho went into the final round of matches on nine points, knowing that a draw would be enough to secure the title ahead of International Master Farley, who was a point behind. (HG)
