Region must learn from disasters

THE REGION MUST learn its lessons from weather disasters like Hurricane Maria.

This is the assessment of both executive director of the Regional Security System (RSS), Captain (Naval) Errington Shurland, and Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defence Force, Colonel Glyne Grannum, after the region suffered heavy losses in back-to-back Category 5 storms in less than two weeks.

“I think it’s high time we in the region look at a building code to how we construct our buildings, whether our homes or government buildings,” Shurland said.

“I think we in the region need to be a little more serious when it comes to hurricane preparedness,” he added. (BA)
