Portia wants more united region

FORMER JAMAICA PRIME MINISTER Portia Simpson Miller thinks a united Caribbean is needed now more than ever as the region tries to recover from recent hurricane devastation.

In this vein, she is urging regional governments, including Barbados, to “seriously support” a Regional Disaster Fund while intensifying their commitment to fighting climate change.

Simpson Miller, Jamaica’s first and only female prime minister, voiced her concerns Tuesday night while delivering the Sagicor Leo Leacock Memorial Lecture at the Errol Barrow Centre For Creative Imagination, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.

The former CARICOM head, who retired from public life in June, said the Caribbean could not afford to wait for “another [hurricane] Irma or Maria to act”.(SC)
