Only C&W for now
Our hands are tied! That’s the Fair Trading Commission’s (FTC) response to Cable & Wireless (Barbados) Limited’s (C&W) complaints that its competitors, including Digicel, are not being held to regulatory standards of service by the FTC.
The MIDWEEK NATION confirmed that the utility regulator recently made it clear that “until such time as the law of Barbados dictates otherwise, other service providers will not be subject to standards of service regulation”.
The FTC’s position comes as it prepares to enforce a new three-year standards of service regime for C&W, effective January 1.
During a visit to Barbados in March, C&W Caribbean head Garry Sinclair complained that his company was operating in an “unfair” and “anachronistic” regulatory environment. The telecommunications company also put its concerns in writing around that same time when the FTC started a review of C&W service standards for the 2014-2017 period. (SC)
