Over 9 000 members of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) will be covered again under a new health insurance plan from May 1.
“It is all go,” BARP’s president Ed Bushell said, as he confirmed the association had secured new coverage, after exceeding the minimum 5 000 membership target required by another insurance provider.
Thousands of BARP members were left without health insurance coverage when Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL) cancelled BARP’s Golden Health Insurance Plan in 2016.
Admitting this was a difficult process, Bushell said: “We have met our target. The insurance company wanted us to get 5 000 and we have signed up over 9 000 [for the health plan] and 15 000 for the Life plan.”
The new insurance providers are Sagicor Life Inc., Beacon Insurance Company Limited and Brydens Insurance Inc., with CGM Gallagher as the broker.
Bushell said hundreds of members turned up at the association’s offices at Marine Gardens to register from the time word went out that a new plan might be in the offing, with as many as 800 people sometimes being signed up in one day. (GC)
