A fire of unknown origin occurred around midday yesterday at Ceres Land, Grazettes, St Michael.

The fire completely destroyed one wooden house owned and occupied by David Hinds, 57.

It also destroyed one wood and wall house owned by Sophia Jaimangal, 52, and Nicole Callender 35. The house was occupied by both Jaimangal and Callender, along with Jason Brathwaite, 30, Kristen Francis, 24, Kristophe Francis, 21, Trisha Cumberbatch, 6, and one-year-old Javid Francis-Brathwaite.

The fire also damaged the trimming to the roof and to the water heater of a wall house owned by Gloria Nowell. The values of the damaged properties are unknown at this time.

Homeowner Sophia Jaimangal came home about midday and was about to rest, she was awoken by the smell of smoke. She went to her bathroom window and was thrown back by the heat coming from the house of David Hinds which was completely on fire.

Hinds was not home at the time of the fire.

Jaimangal had to escape from her house as the fire quickly entered her home and she was unable to save her property but managed to remove some articles of clothing.

The house owned by Gloria Nowell was slightly damaged as a result of the fire.

None of the homes were insured.

Divisional officer Gittens, Station Officers Vaughn and Hinds along with 12 officers, three fire tenders and a water tanker responded and the fire was extinguished.
