March not just for LGBTQs

Social Share

Saturday’s Pride Barbados parade is not just for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) community.

In fact director of Barbados Gays, Lesbians and All-sexuals against Discrimination (BGLAAD), Donnya Piggott, has extended an invitation to other marginalised groups, including Rastafarians, the disabled and women.

In a release on Friday, Piggott stated that the Barbadian LGBTQ community is just as committed to the development of Barbados as the rest of the population, and she made it clear that they were deserving of respect.

“Needless to say, we need be treated as equal citizens, included and recognised. For as long as we can remember, LGBTQ people have been treated as secondary citizens when we contribute equally to our country and are society.”

Her comments come after several Christian leaders, including Apostle Eliseus Joseph, Bishop Marlon Husbands and Dr Veronica Evelyn, came together and took a stand against what they claim is an attempt to make “homosexual preferences a human right in Barbados”. (TG)
