At least 7 000 visitors came to Barbados during the just ended Crop Over festival using the growing Airbnb option. The figures made available to THE NATION on Monday by an Airbnb official showed that an increasing number of visitors are by-passing the traditional hotels.

Airbnb’s country manager for the Caribbean and Central America, Mikel Freemon, said they were encouraged by this level of support for the sector.

“We are thrilled that over 7 000 guests visited Barbados during Crop Over and stayed at an Airbnb,” she stated, adding that those guests travelled from all over the world, with most of them coming from New York, London and Toronto.

“We are also pleased to see ten per cent of travellers were intra-regional originating within the Caribbean. It’s in Airbnb’s DNA to help destinations during big events, allowing for flexible extra accommodations and the democratisation of tourism revenue for the local population.” (GC)
