Six-year-old Refire is capable of running from the front or middle of the pack. His entry in the 2018 edition of Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup could enhance his connections’ chances of liftingtheir first Cup.
This son of Lonhro out of Refrain will go off as one of the long shots in the race based on his performance over the last year. He has been very consistent among horses rated 105 and below, but, has never been a solid factor when competing with the big boys rated 140-120.
His pet distance is 1 800 metres but it has always been a question of lack of class rather than one of stamina for him. Refire, when at his best and proven level, pulled off a hat-trick of wins between January and March 2017 with a creole finishing second on each occasion.
He managed his lone win at this distance in 2018 when he took the Palm Beach Condominium Handicap. To give credence to his stamina, he won the Saleh And Khatija Mohamad Memorial Trophy Condition Race over 2 200 metres, defeating two-time Gold Cup winner Dorsett. (LY)
