One of the island’s road safety advocates has passed away.

Richard Cox, the long-time public relations officer of the Barbados Road Safety Association, was found at his Glebe Land, St George home yesterday.

The 78-year-old had been hospitalised for a brief time.

President of the association, Sharmaine Roland-Bowen said Cox had complained of chest pains and spent just over two weeks in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

“I then spoke to him last Friday after he had been released, and he was in his usual jovial mood. He was happy and wasn’t complaining about anything,” Bowen said.

“The executive and members of the Barbados Road Safety Association are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Richard Cox. He worked tirelessly to improve safety on our roads through education and activism along with practical driver training.”

Cox’s niece Lisa Spooner said her uncle had been doing well after his stint in the hospital, and they had recently discussed changing his diet.

However, they worried when they did not hear him and the landlord discovered his body when he went to check on the tenant.

“He was a great uncle,” Spooner said. “He was a very helpful man. We are going to miss him. This is a very hard time for the family right now.”

Richard Cox Jr 41, his lone son, who was born and lives in the United Kingdom, is expected to return for his dad’s funeral. (BA/SAT)
