Speightstown Esplanade run down NCC says no to proposed upgrade
The Speightstown Esplanade, once the showpiece of the northern hub, is in need of an upgrade.
St Peter residents and those who conduct business in the town say it is in a sorry and confusing state, with the gazebo looking like new while the seating area, in contrast, looks shabby and in a state of ruin.
These days the area, which is visited by busloads of tourists, caters more to vagrants and the homeless rather than the many northerners who used to pack the Esplanade for concerts, movie nights and other entertainment.
David Belgrave, who no longer lives in St Peter but visits often to lime with the men he grew up with, said he was saddened by its condition.
“We are all from the vicinity – schoolmates from All Saints School. We used to come here as boys when the Esplanade was an esplanade. I find that it is deteriorating – it needs upgrading.
