130 bus target

The Transport Board will have 115 buses available by the first week in September – in time for the opening of the school year, says chairman Ian Gooding-Edghill.

He said presently “bus availability has stabilised at about 75 buses” while another 40 buses will be delivered from three major garages over the next two weeks.

Gooding-Edghill said another 15 buses fitted with the new power train units (energy-saving engines) will be added in September to push the complement of units to 130, past the minimum 120 needed to adequately service all the routes across the country.

“We are making steady progress and are on our way to recovery, but we had to stabilise the fleet. At the same time, we are taking buses out of service to do routine servicing every week, which means that although we are showing availability at approximately 75 buses, we are more or less averaging availability at 80 buses. We have more buses on the road today than we had when I joined the board [in May]. In fact, we only had 33 buses then,” said Gooding-Edghill. He pointed out that the special bus project started only in June after funds were approved. (SP)
