DEM Director: Stay indoors, emergency services available

Stay indoors!

That is the message to Barbadians, especially those in the north, as the island continues to be hit by heavy showers which have caused flooding.

Director of the Department of Emergency Management, Kerry Hinds, in a statement issued today, said St Lucy seems to have taken the brunt of the rain.

As she made her rounds, she said some roads were impassable and water was raging across others. A few vehicles had stalled and the Royal Barbados Police Force had patrols in the area.

“I am just asking residents to stay indoors. Please do not attempt to traverse the water,” Hinds said.

She also told residents to reach out to the emergency services if they needed assistance. The Police can be contacted at 211, the Fire Service at 311 and District Chair of the St Lucy District Emergency Organisation, Rontae Johnson-Annius, at 439-8169.

The Barbados Meteorological Service issued a flash flood watch this morning and subsequently upgraded it to a warning. It will remain in effect until 5 p.m.

Residents in the north have been documenting the weather with their mobile phones. Videos making the rounds showed heavy water on the ground at Crab Hill, Benthams and St Clements in St Lucy. Rose Hill and Boscobel, St Peter, also had heavy showers and were overcast. (SAT)
