The cost of housing someone at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds, St Philip, is almost $32 000 a year.
That’s why the Ministry of Home Affairs will seek the approval of Cabinet for alternative sentencing to address deviant behaviour among young people to keep them out of jail.
And this cost does not include incidentals like hospital treatment or a drug reform programme.
So said Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson as he spoke at a retirement ceremony for Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Cedric DaCosta Moore at Dodds Prisons on Friday.
Alternative sentences include painting schools, assisting the elderly, using ankle monitoring devices, and the offender compensating the victims. (SP)
