Strong quake shakes northern Caribbean

BRIDGETOWN – Buildings were evacuated in the Cayman Islands as a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 triggered fears of a tsunami in the British Overseas territory, Cuba and Jamaica.

The USGS reported that the quake occurred at 2:10 pm local time (3:10 p.m. Barbados time) at a depth of 10 kilometres (km).

It said the epicentre was located latitude / longitude: 19.315°N / 78.814°W of the Cayman Islands.

Residents on the Cayman Islands said that buildings were evacuated.

Tremors were felt in several parishes in Jamaica, as well as The Bahamas and Haiti. (CMC)
