Sir Austin backs Games delay

Retired International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Sir Austin Sealy believes it would have caused major disappointment for athletes, particularly for those who were near retirement if the Tokyo Olympics were cancelled and not postponed.

“It would definitely hurt those nearing the end of their careers but at least you’ve got a host who is willing to accept a postponement and that’s half of the battle,’’ Sir Austin told WEEKEND SPORT in the aftermath of the IOC’s decision to defer the Games to next year as a result of the global threat of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

“It will call for some readjustment and I’ve already seen the athletics body saying they’re prepared to make rearrangements to their World Championship which is scheduled for Eugene, Oregon by shifting dates to accommodate what will still be called Tokyo 2020.” (EZS)
