Dear Helen,
I’m nearing 70 and from the time I was a teenager I had large breasts. I eventually found the right size bra to wear as a grown woman, and for years I wore the wrong fitting bra as I didn’t know any better. And my breasts are heavy.
So I have two questions. What is the best fit and right size of bras? Since my breasts are so heavy, I wonder if the weight of them is making me walk with a slight bend or if my curving back is part of ageing? Agnes Dear Agnes,
Rather than ask me, I think you would be better to ask a lingerie fitter at a department store.
I remember for my 40th birthday, I treated myself to a new bra from a company that’s situated next to Harrods, in Knightsbridge, London. It was the most expensive bra I had ever purchased but my goodness, it fitted well – and lasted really well!
It was quite an experience! I’d been measured for correctly fitting bras in the past, and had ‘guesstimated’ my size many times – but this was something else. The sales assistant invited me to ‘strip down’ in a private cubicle… I thought she’d measure me… but no.. She asked me to turn round and bend slightly forwards, then back. She then left and returned with three bras to try. Only after I’d chosen one that fitted so comfortably and looked lovely did she tell me that asking for a 36B was far from the mark… I was a 32D because I have a narrow back. I’m all boob!! My goodness, this was a shock… but I learned so much from the experience. Good ‘fitters’ spend their days this way and it can be amazing. Therefore, make the time to seek out a bra fitter and ask her advice. I’m confident that there’s a very comfortable bra out there, just waiting for you.
I hope this helps. – Helen
