Police said Gordon Proverbs, 72, reportedly collapsed and died along the Mighty Grynner Highway in St Michael around 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The body of the Brighton, Black Rock, St Michael man was identified by relatives who visited the scene.
Police said ambulance personnel were summoned by a passerby who had witnessed the incident. A doctor visited the scene and pronounced death.
“There was no visible evidence of foul play. Police are treating this as a sudden death,” a statement said.
Police said investigations continue.
Friend Bernard Alleyne, who visited the scene, said Proverbs was a spear fisherman in his youth but had to give it up after developing a heart condition. Alleyne said Proverbs frequented the Shallow Draught, where he had reportedly left when he collapsed.
Alleyne said Proverbs had no children. He was one of four people gathered around the body, in addition to the police officers.
Another friend, who requested anonymity, was sitting near the body. He said Proverbs had loved the sea all his life. He said when he heard the news, he dropped what he was doing and came straight to the scene. (CA)
