Massiah wins second CARIFTA silver medal

Aaron Massiah won Barbados’ lone medal on Sunday at the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games when he finished second in the Under-17 boys’ triple jump at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in The Bahamas.

The Barbados medal tally crept to four – two gold and two silver. Massiah already has a silver medal from the long jump, while Ashlyn Simmons and Layla Haynes won gold on the opening night in their respective 1 500 metres races.

On his fourth attempt, Massiah sealed the silver medal with a hop, skip and jump measured at 13.93 metres, well below his personal best. Euan Young of Jamaica was a comfortable winner with 14.32 and Ezekiel Saul of Guyana secured the bronze with a best of 13.53m.

In the other finals contested on Sunday evening, debutant Luke McIntrye was fifth in the Under-17 boys’ 3 000 metres in 9 minutes 44.66 seconds. The race was won by Demetrie Mayers of Belize in 9:08.56 and Jamaican Kaydeen Johnson won the girls’ equivalent in 10:41.11

Brieanna Boyce was sixth overall in the Under-20 girls’ 400m hurdles in 64.17. Michelle Smith of the British Virgin Islands brought it home in 57.69 seconds.

Jody-Ann Daley (61:05) of Jamaica won the Under-17 girls’ event, Akanye Samuel-Francis (54.14) was first among the Under-17 boys and 49.92 secured gold for Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke among the Under-20 boys.

The Under-20 boys’ 4x100m relay quartet was fourth in 40.85 seconds.

Kadia Rock did not advance to the final of the 200 metres, but Barbadians can look forward to seeing Aniya Nurse, Khristel Martindale, Aragorn Straker and Amani Mascoll-Beckles in Monday’s finals. Kaden Dowrich-Roach was a non-starter after picking up an injury before the 400m final on Saturday.

There is hope for more medals in the 800 metres which will feature Haynes, Simmons, Chanecia Bryan and Favian Gollop. (SAT)
